BECOMING THE CAMP MANAGER

Words: Justin McCarthy
You might imagine that growing up in a ski resort gave me little opportunity to fish when I was young. On the contrary. Fish love water. Steamboat Springs in Colorado is on the Yampa River, and though shing during the long hard winters was limited to a few popular tail-waters that flowed at a consistent temperature year round from the bottom of the controversial dams, like the Frying Pan River near Aspen with brown trout to 20 pounds, back then the opportunities seemed unlimited once the snow melted…

THE ÅRØY RIVER

Words: Scot de Bruyn
Pizza, Beer and BIG SALMON!

FLY CORNER: SUNRAYS AND SINGLE HOOKS

Words: Jens Olav Flekke
Why use big trebles when a single hook will do a better job (and is more gentle to the fish)?

LESSONS TO A SALMON DANDY – FROM A STEELHEAD BUM

Words: Øystein Aas

GOTLAND DIARY

Words: Pieta Piiroinen
Gotland is a beautiful island some 90 kilometers off the Swedish mainland. It is the biggest island of Sweden and the Baltic Sea with a shoreline of 800 kilometers. The water is clear and the landscapes ruggedly impressive. The long shores are lined with steep chalkstone cliffs. The island provides good surroundings for sea trout fishing.

HUNTING BIG SALMON – PART I

Words: Topher Browne

THE MYSTERY

Words: Toni Kakkuri
Autumn dusk started to descend on the River Dee valley. I was walking the path to the uppermost pool of our shing area with an intention to make a few more casts before it got dark. At the boat shore I was met by a merry group of my shing buddies who were already planning to call it a day. ey tempted me to forget about whipping the river in vain and to join them instead. Contrary to my habits I refused, because I was overcome by that subconscious premonition that often comes just before the salmon shing turns good.

MY TRUSTED FLIES

Words: Miki Äikäs
I have been chasing salmon for a long time. I have sweated in neoprene waders, later changed to those “gifts from God”, the “lighter” brown waders by Red Ball, tried out hundreds of different rods, lines, boots, jackets, and most importantly all varieties of flies.

THE KYMI RIVER

Words: Jarno Ollikainen
Kymi is the only genuine salmon river in the Southern Finland. Its best fishing places are located in Kotka, some 130 kilometers east of Helsinki, so the drive there from Finland’s capital takes about an hour and a half. Large salmon, originally of the Neva river stock, swim into the Kymi.
